Malembe

Malembe is the Shangaane local tribe word for the Black Rhinoceros. One of the megafauna of Africa they are territorial and shy. Smaller than the white rhino they are also called the hooklipped rhino adapted to browsing rather than grazing. White rhinos are also larger and have a hump on their shoulders and rump but more docile then the black rhino. I know each rhino by name now Duchess Z

Paradise Camp

Paradise is quiet in the days early light birds heralding the rising sun as it shines across the tree tops. I am alone in the kitchen a moment of stillness before the hustle and bustle as each new day begins. My memories of the camp in Zimbabwe cling to the periphery of my conciousness as dew clings to leaves of grass bombarded with familiar sounds and smells. The child that I was still stares

Dinner Finale

After a quick change and freshening up from our bus tour we headed out for our final dinner together as a group. We traveled about 30 minutes up the western coastline for a beach BBQ. We enjoyed a very relaxed dinner with a spectacular view of the ocean in front and mountain range behind. The food and wine were plentiful throughout the week and tonight was no different. South Africa has the pe

Rock picking

Rock picking has not been one of my favorite past times. I remembeer being dropped off on Yarrow Creek with a Be back in an hour and left there for......eons. Many hours during my teenage years were spent building wire baskets and then filling them with rocks to replace fence posts in the rocky creek crossings. In Africa though it is much harder to find rocks. We mine them out of washouts an

This is Africa

I am sweating and tired and completely satisfied. A cool drink in my hand the fire is on dinner is prepped and I am surrounded by the sound of laughter. I don39t even know where to begin. My senses have been overloaded my hands worked to the bone but my soul is bursting with life. The call of the hyena regailed me at 5 am as the camp stirred to life and the adventure began in earnest. Airport shuttle to O.R Tambo What an experience.

I thought I39d start my travel blog with a local story of a hectic travel experience. I got this wierd inner ear condition called BPPV. To be very short about it it39s basicallly a situation where the little calcium crystals in your ear that tell your brain which way gravity is get dislodged and go travelling down to a place where they39re not supposed to be. This causes dizzyness like

Monkey Around

Thursday39s start included a very early morning work session with the CSR team where I was able to share the emotional township tour. Since this group is shaping the charitable arm of our organization it was decided that we should start by leaving a legacy right in Cape Town. More to come on that.Thursday was a full day booked on large coaches for a tour of the country side and southern coas
