Moving day
So I have packed my backpacks and my suitcase and I will be going to a new home today. At the new home there is a mother and daughter around my age. The benefits are they are nice the neighbor is quiet the room is bigger and the bed is comfortable. So basically everything is better. I had a good heart to heart with Senora Nancy and we talked about the move. Apparently she never requested

Snow in August
Being from the Northern Hemisphere you always think of August as the hottest month of the year. Of course here in Patagonia it's reversed. On Thursday August 26 it started to snow and didn't stop until almost 48 hours later. By Saturday morning the snow had stopped the clouds were gone making it a beautiful day. You could see all the mountains around the city covered in snow. Patagonia truly i
Chile Completos and Fiestas in the desert
The first four days in Santiago were a write off while I was hit by bird flu. Luckily the hostel we stayed at was amazing La Casa Roja thanks for the recommendation Miss Lisa Whyte previously a rich family's mansion it has massive rooms filled with victorian style furniture. A bit of a party hostel at any hour of the day there will be someone playing a guitar and a group of people drinking
My future is...
Last week with my 12th graders I have been talking about the future their future. And it's made me realize how challenging and important is my presence here in southern Chile. Thankfully most kids know that their future depends on them continuing their studies in the university. Some one to be doctors journalists teachers and some even politicians. But there are a considerable amount that do n
Feliz Aniversario
Friday the last day of the school's celebration was a party day. I spent the whole day with the elementary school which had planned to ask the kids to come dressed up in costumes based on their class theme. The first thing we did in the morning was to eat cake cake and more cake. After we had the rest of the morning to do some activities and competitions. Because it was raining we couldn't do

The second half of our winter break we decided to visit the Biobio region. This included Concepcion Chillan and termas de chillan. Our first stop was Concepcion. Picture perfect Puerto Varas
To get to Puerto Varas we had to fly into Puerto Montt airport and were transferred by car for 45 minutes to Puerto Varas by a woman trying to sell us every tour under the sun. We stayed at the Vicky Johnson guesthouse a lovely old place with massive high ceilings and a massive living room to read in. The town of Puerto Varas is very picturesque and we sat by the huge lake enjoying the surround
Shimmering lakes surrounded by snowcapped mountains...The Chilean Lakes District
Our night bus from Santiago to Pucon was wonderful...blankets pillows snacks and foot rests all for 30 I popped a melatonin and woke up 7 hours later to the sun shining off the lake under the huffing cone of Volcan Villarrica 2847m...stunningPucon was my winter adventure playground...the first day we hiked through the forest on snowshoes. We had an incredible view of the lake at the top an
A 39hour ferry ride
To finally get into Coyhaique we hopped on a 36 hour ferry which turned up to be 39 hours from Quellon to Puerto Chacubuco where we would have to take a one hour bus into Coyhaique. We were under the impression that since it would be such a long journey having to spend two nights at the ferry that we would have a room. Again like most times during our journey we were wrong. The ferry had 175
Chiloe
Our official first leg of the journey home was through the island of Chiloe the second largest island in South America. This journey was supposed to last 6 hours until we reached the southernmost city of the island Quellon. We believed that the island was connected to the mainland by a bridge but as we were driving south the bus jumped on a ferry. As we continued our journey we found out that
Halfway point
Thats right ladies and gentlemen I have officially reached my half way point down here. Crazy how time flies. Since my last blog my roommate Jessica and friends Rachel Amanda and I did the horse ridingziplining outside of Con Con. When we arrived we were all very skeptical. The zipline tour was in these skinny rickety trees off the highway and we were like Canopy tour Really Or just play
Starry Starry Night
After a long night bus in which I had the front seat on the top deck so I felt like I was in a video game I arrived in La Serena. The hotel wasn't exactly my favourite what with the mold on the walls and stench of damp. Spent a bit of the afternoon watching football browsing the supersize supermarket seriously this supermarket novelty does not wear off in South America and watching TV e
Hiking Volcan Villarica
We got up at the crack of dawn to put our gear on and go hike up the volcano. Usually people start hiking the volcano at 5000ft where the ski lifts can take you but being winter the lifts were frozen. We had to start at about 300ft at 8am. Twenty minutes into our hike my heart was racing and my feet were hurting. Breaks were never long enough for me but I had to keep on trekking. Every ten minut
Asado in Pucon
As soon as we arrived in Pucon we fell in love with the town. It is a small ski outdorsy town two hours from Temuco which everyone who visits Chile must go to. Our hostel is amazing. It is called Tree House Hostel and is run by the most adorable Chileans. One of them Alex immediately offered to help us find things to do in town and even cook us an asado It was delicious He made us pork and s
Gorging our way round Santiago
We arrived in Santiago after an hour and a half bus ride and took our first South American metro to the stop nearest to the hostel. It was then a bit of a walk along pleasant treelined streets through the Barrio Brazil with our bags weighing us down. Our hostel Casa Roja is set in an amazing building an old mansion with high high ceilings and beautiful intricate details on the interior
